The Animat Animattress 1 has been my go-to recommendation. It’s the best freestall mattress system for dairy cows.
The Teriele Family has owned and operated a small dairy farm in Canton, NY for over 4 generations. Their farm, which has a herd of 450 dairy cows, needed a replacement mattress for their freestalls. The current mattresses were hard, uneven, and the top cover was torn. While the bedding was affordable, it had started to cause problems for the dairy cows who were developing sores and exhibiting signs of discomfort.
This translated to decreased lying time, increased abrasions, and dirtier conditions in the stalls. The Teriele family recognized that this lack of comfort risked negatively affecting their milk production and overall wellbeing.

We’re seeing the cows lying down more frequently and for longer periods of time. The incidence of hock sores decreased significantly, indicating the Animattress 1 was more comfortable and better suited to the needs of the cows.
It also helped us increase our herd size and our milking capacity. We increased by half a turn per hour, which allowed us to add some cows after putting in the mats.
With the old bedding removed from the barn and replaced with the cushioning and strength of the Animattress 1, there was a visible and immediate improvement in cow comfort.
