We redid the flooring in our double 24 herringbone milking parlor last September because the concrete was becoming too worn out. So, we levelled it and put Animat's Pebble Top mats on top of it.
Prairieland Dairy is part of the Ohlde Family Farms. They milk 4,000 cows on 3 sites, including Prairieland Dairy. Ohlde Family Farms, including Prairieland Dairy, is known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices, animal welfare, and innovative farming techniques to improve productivity and efficiency.
Over time, the concrete on the milking parlor deck had become significantly worn, with exposed rebar creating an unsafe environment for cows and disrupting daily milking operations. This deteriorating condition increased the risk of injury and lameness among the herd, affecting both animal welfare and productivity.
After renovating and leveling the concrete deck in their milking parlor last September, Prairieland Dairy decided to install Animat’s Pebble Top rubber mats to prevent future deterioration and increase cow comfort.
The biggest difference we've seen is in the reduction in lameness. Last spring, we were running 1.9% of the herd with lameness incidences, and this year we're at 0.9%, so we reduced it by a full percent.
It also helped us increase our herd size and our milking capacity. We increased by half a turn per hour, which allowed us to add some cows after putting in the mats.
The Pebble Top rubber mats were chosen for their non-abrasive, raised profile, which provides enhanced traction and prevents manure packing. These features help create a calmer, cleaner, and more hygienic environment for the cows during milking.
