Startseite » Evaluating the impact of rubber mats in holding pens on fed cattle mobility and behavior at a commercial slaughter facility
Emerging evidence continues to highlight the role of rubber flooring in cattle welfare.
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Animal Science (Dean et al.) — conducted by researchers from Colorado State University in collaboration with Cargill — evaluated ~23,000 fed cattle across 204 pen groups in a commercial U.S. facility.
✔ Increased the likelihood of normal mobility
✔ Made cattle ~57% more likely to stand comfortably
✔ Reduced lying
✔ Was preferred by 92% of workers
These results suggest that high-traction flooring can improve locomotor stability and alter behavioral expression during lairage — with implications for both animal welfare and operational efficiency.
