L'Institut de recherche agricole a publi\u00e9 une \u00e9tude sur les avantages \u00e9conomiques li\u00e9s \u00e0 l'am\u00e9lioration du confort des vaches. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 constat\u00e9 que les vaches laiti\u00e8res semblent avoir un besoin comportemental important de repos ad\u00e9quat. Les vaches laiti\u00e8res sont tr\u00e8s motiv\u00e9es pour se coucher environ 12 heures par jour. Les vaches dont le temps de repos est limit\u00e9 pr\u00e9sentent des concentrations s\u00e9riques de cortisol plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es et des concentrations d'hormone de croissance plus faibles, des probl\u00e8mes de sant\u00e9 au niveau des sabots et de locomotion, et parfois une production laiti\u00e8re plus faible. Chaque heure de repos suppl\u00e9mentaire dont b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie une vache se traduit par une augmentation de la production laiti\u00e8re d'environ 3,7 livres.<\/p>\n

Les vaches sacrifient leur alimentation afin de r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer le temps de repos perdu. Un lieu de repos propre, sec et confortable est associ\u00e9 \u00e0 un temps de repos plus long, une meilleure sant\u00e9 et une productivit\u00e9 accrue. Des stalles plus moelleuses sont associ\u00e9es \u00e0 une production laiti\u00e8re plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Comme pr\u00e9vu, le sable \u00e9tait le mat\u00e9riau pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9, mais ils ont remarqu\u00e9 que les matelas en mousse \u00e9taient comparables au sable. Les vaches pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent les surfaces de repos plus compressibles (c'est-\u00e0-dire plus molles). Les chercheurs ont mesur\u00e9 les changements dans la conception et la gestion des stalles afin d'augmenter ou de r\u00e9duire le temps de repos de trois \u00e0 cinq heures par jour. Le type de liti\u00e8re, son taux d'humidit\u00e9, la largeur et la longueur des stalles, la quantit\u00e9 de liti\u00e8re, l'emplacement des barri\u00e8res, l'entretien de la surface de la liti\u00e8re (en \u00e9vitant les \u00ab nids-de-poule \u00bb), l'utilisation de rep\u00e8res pour le poitrail et la densit\u00e9 d'\u00e9levage ont tous une influence significative sur le temps pass\u00e9 \u00e0 se coucher. L'am\u00e9lioration du confort d'une stalle devrait permettre d'augmenter la production laiti\u00e8re, de r\u00e9duire le taux de r\u00e9forme, de diminuer le nombre de cellules somatiques et d'am\u00e9liorer l'\u00e9tat de boiterie du troupeau. A clean, dry and comfortable resting place is associated with greater resting time, better health and improved productivity. Softer stalls were associated with higher milk production. Changes in stall design and management have been measured by researchers to increase or decrease lying time by as much as three to five hours per day.
