Les matelas en caoutchouc et en mousse sont tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9s dans les \u00e9tables \u00e0 stabulation libre, car ils offrent un amorti constant et une barri\u00e8re thermique entre la vache et le b\u00e9ton. Cependant, m\u00eame les meilleurs syst\u00e8mes de matelas n\u00e9cessitent encore une couche modeste de liti\u00e8re pour maintenir l'hygi\u00e8ne et prot\u00e9ger la sant\u00e9 des animaux.<\/p>\n

Bien que nos matelas r\u00e9duisent consid\u00e9rablement le besoin en liti\u00e8re \u00e9paisse comme le sable, une petite quantit\u00e9 de liti\u00e8re reste indispensable. La liti\u00e8re aide \u00e0 absorber l'humidit\u00e9, \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler les bact\u00e9ries, \u00e0 pr\u00e9server la sant\u00e9 des jarrets et \u00e0 maintenir la propret\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l'\u00e9table. Des \u00e9tudes confirment cette n\u00e9cessit\u00e9. Par exemple, une recherche men\u00e9e par l'universit\u00e9 du Wisconsin (Cook, 2002) a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que les vaches log\u00e9es sur des matelas en caoutchouc sans aucune liti\u00e8re pr\u00e9sentaient une incidence plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e de l\u00e9sions aux jarrets et une hygi\u00e8ne des stalles moins bonne que celles qui disposaient d'une fine couche de sciure de bois. De m\u00eame, une \u00e9tude r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 2010 par l'universit\u00e9 Cornell a montr\u00e9 que lorsque 1 \u00e0 2 livres de liti\u00e8re s\u00e8che par vache et par jour \u00e9taient utilis\u00e9es sur des matelas, comme de la sciure de bois ou des solides de fumier recycl\u00e9s (RMS), la propret\u00e9 des stalles \u00e9tait comparable \u00e0 celle obtenue avec une liti\u00e8re de sable \u00e9paisse, en supposant de bonnes pratiques de gestion.<\/p>\n

Les observations sur le terrain corroborent \u00e9galement ces conclusions. Dans les \u00e9tables o\u00f9 les exploitants ont tent\u00e9 d'\u00e9liminer compl\u00e8tement la liti\u00e8re, on a r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement signal\u00e9 une augmentation du nombre de cellules somatiques, une augmentation des cas de mammite, des vaches \u00e9vitant les stalles et une usure acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e des matelas eux-m\u00eames. Ces probl\u00e8mes sont particuli\u00e8rement prononc\u00e9s dans les environnements humides o\u00f9 l'humidit\u00e9, l'urine et le fumier peuvent se d\u00e9poser directement \u00e0 la surface du matelas. Cela cr\u00e9e un terrain propice \u00e0 la prolif\u00e9ration des bact\u00e9ries et entra\u00eene une d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de l'int\u00e9grit\u00e9 cutan\u00e9e des vaches.<\/p>\n

Cette approche permet de contr\u00f4ler efficacement l'humidit\u00e9, de favoriser la sant\u00e9 des mamelles et de la peau, et de maintenir le confort des vaches, tout en r\u00e9duisant consid\u00e9rablement les co\u00fbts de liti\u00e8re par rapport aux syst\u00e8mes traditionnels.<\/p>\n
