\u00abUn trabajo anterior de Fulwider y Palmer, 2003, indicaba que las vacas pasan tanto tiempo tumbadas en establos con colchones bien dise\u00f1ados como en establos con arena, pero pasan m\u00e1s tiempo de pie en los establos con colchones. Cook et al., 2004a, llegaron a la misma conclusi\u00f3n (Tabla 9). Se han propuesto diferentes razones para explicar estos fen\u00f3menos. En oto\u00f1o de 2003 se instalaron alfombrillas de goma (RAM) en todos los pasillos del mismo corral en el que se hab\u00edan realizado anteriormente estudios sobre las preferencias de las vacas en cuanto a los establos. La tabla 11 muestra el efecto de las alfombrillas de goma en el uso de los establos (Fulwider y Palmer, 2003). Se registr\u00f3 el uso de los establos durante 31 d\u00edas antes de instalar las RAM. Se concedi\u00f3 un periodo de aclimataci\u00f3n de tres semanas para que las vacas ajustaran sus patrones de comportamiento y, a continuaci\u00f3n, se registraron las actividades en los establos y se compararon los resultados con los valores anteriores.
