El Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Agr\u00edcola public\u00f3 una rese\u00f1a sobre los beneficios econ\u00f3micos de mejorar el confort de las vacas. Se\u00f1alaron que las vacas lecheras parecen tener una fuerte necesidad conductual de descansar adecuadamente. El ganado lechero tiene una gran motivaci\u00f3n para tumbarse durante aproximadamente 12 horas al d\u00eda. Las vacas con tiempo de descanso limitado tienen mayores concentraciones de cortisol s\u00e9rico y menores concentraciones de hormona del crecimiento, problemas de salud en las pezu\u00f1as y de locomoci\u00f3n y, en ocasiones, menor producci\u00f3n de leche. Por cada hora adicional de descanso que consigue una vaca, se obtiene una respuesta lechera de aproximadamente 3,7 libras.<\/p>\n

Las vacas sacrificar\u00e1n la alimentaci\u00f3n en un esfuerzo por recuperar el tiempo de descanso perdido. Un lugar de descanso limpio, seco y c\u00f3modo se asocia con un mayor tiempo de descanso, una mejor salud y una mayor productividad. Los establos m\u00e1s suaves se asociaron con una mayor producci\u00f3n de leche.<\/p>\n

Como era de esperar, la arena fue la opci\u00f3n preferida, pero observaron que los colchones de espuma eran muy similares a la arena. Las vacas prefieren superficies m\u00e1s compresibles (es decir, m\u00e1s blandas) para tumbarse. Los investigadores han medido los cambios en el dise\u00f1o y la gesti\u00f3n de los establos para aumentar o disminuir el tiempo de descanso entre tres y cinco horas al d\u00eda.
