\u201eFr\u00fchere Arbeiten von Fulwider und Palmer (2003) zeigten, dass K\u00fche in gut gestalteten Matratzenboxen genauso viel Zeit liegend verbringen wie in Sandboxen, aber mehr Zeit stehend in Matratzenboxen verbringen. Cook et al. (2004a) kamen zu dem gleichen Ergebnis (Tabelle 9). Zur Erkl\u00e4rung dieses Ph\u00e4nomens wurden verschiedene Gr\u00fcnde vorgeschlagen. Im Herbst 2003 wurden Gummimatten (RAM) in allen G\u00e4ngen desselben Stalls verlegt, in dem zuvor Studien zur Stallpr\u00e4ferenz durchgef\u00fchrt worden waren. Tabelle 11 zeigt die Auswirkungen der Gummimatten auf die Stallnutzung (Fulwider und Palmer, 2003). Die Stallnutzung wurde 31 Tage lang vor der Verlegung der RAM-Matten aufgezeichnet. Es wurde eine dreiw\u00f6chige Eingew\u00f6hnungsphase einger\u00e4umt, damit sich die K\u00fche anpassen konnten. Anschlie\u00dfend wurden die Aktivit\u00e4ten in den Liegeboxen aufgezeichnet und die Ergebnisse mit den vorherigen Werten verglichen. Es wurde keine Ver\u00e4nderung in der Anzahl der Liegeboxen festgestellt, in denen eine Kuh lag, aber der Prozentsatz der Liegeboxen, in denen K\u00fche standen, ging deutlich zur\u00fcck. Dies wurde so interpretiert, dass K\u00fche es vorziehen, auf weichen Oberfl\u00e4chen zu stehen.
